Fixing Column Issues

Column formatting in Word uses section breaks behind the scenes, which can cause unexpected behavior.

Problem: Columns Apply to Wrong Section

1. Press Ctrl+A to select the entire document
2. Go to Layout > Columns and choose your column layout
3. This applies columns to the whole document

Problem: Text Won’t Flow to Next Column

1. Click where you want the column break
2. Go to Layout > Breaks > Column
3. Text after the break moves to the next column

Problem: Uneven Columns on the Last Page

1. Place your cursor at the end of the last column
2. Go to Layout > Breaks > Continuous (Section Break)
3. This forces Word to balance the columns evenly

Problem: Column Widths Are Wrong

1. Go to Layout > Columns > More Columns
2. Uncheck Equal column width to set individual widths
3. Adjust each column’s width and spacing
4. Click OK

Problem: Images Break Column Layout

1. Click the image
2. Set text wrapping to In Line with Text or Top and Bottom
3. Avoid Square or Through wrapping in columns — they cause unpredictable behavior
4. Resize images to fit within a single column width

Tips for Column Documents

• Use column breaks instead of pressing Enter to push content to the next column
• Keep images narrower than the column width
• Preview your layout in Print Layout view (View > Print Layout)
