Can I crack a Word document password?

An 'open' password (required to open the file) uses strong encryption and cannot be easily bypassed. An 'editing restriction' password can be removed through the ZIP/XML method. Never use tools that claim to crack passwords — they're often malware.

Types of Word Password Protection

Word has two types of protection, and the recovery method differs:

Open password: Required to open the file (strong encryption, very difficult to bypass)
Editing restriction: Allows reading but restricts editing (can be removed)

Removing Editing Restrictions

Method 1: ZIP/XML Method

Make a copy of the file
Rename the copy from .docx to .zip
Open the ZIP file
Navigate to the word folder
Open settings.xml in a text editor
Find the <w:documentProtection> element and delete it entirely
Save settings.xml back into the ZIP
Rename the .zip back to .docx
Open the file — editing restrictions should be removed

Method 2: VBA Method

Open the file in Word (it opens in read-only)
Press Alt+F11 to open the VBA editor
Go to Tools > Macro
This method has limitations and may not work on all protection types

For Open Password (Cannot Open File)

If you can’t open the file at all:

Try common passwords: Try passwords you typically use
Check email: Search your email for when the file was sent — the password may be in a message
Check password manager: Look in your password manager for notes
Contact the sender: If someone sent you the file, ask for the password
IT department: Your organization’s IT may have recovery tools
