Respuesta Rápida

Show formatting marks with Ctrl+Shift+8 to see section breaks. To remove a problematic section break, place your cursor just before it and press Delete. Note: the section before the break will adopt the formatting of the section after it.

Understanding Section Breaks

Section breaks divide your document into sections, each with independent formatting settings. They’re powerful but can cause confusion when formatting goes wrong.

Pasos para solucionar

Step 1: Find All Section Breaks

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+8 to show formatting marks
  2. Section breaks appear as double dotted lines labeled “Section Break (Next Page)” or “Section Break (Continuous)”
  3. Or use Find: press Ctrl+H > More > Special > Section Break

Step 2: Remove a Problematic Section Break

  1. Place your cursor just BEFORE the section break
  2. Press Delete
  3. Important: the text before the break will now adopt the formatting of the section that was after the break

Step 3: Replace Section Breaks with Page Breaks

If you only need a new page (not different formatting):

  1. Delete the section break (as above)
  2. Place your cursor where you want the page break
  3. Press Ctrl+Enter to insert a simple page break

Step 4: Fix Formatting After Removing Section Breaks

After removing section breaks, you may need to:

  1. Reapply margins: Layout > Margins
  2. Reapply headers/footers: double-click header area
  3. Fix page numbers: Insert > Page Number > Format Page Numbers
  4. Fix page orientation: Layout > Orientation

Types of Section Breaks

  • Next Page: Starts the new section on the next page (most common)
  • Continuous: Starts the new section on the same page (used for columns)
  • Even Page / Odd Page: Starts on the next even/odd page

When to Use Section Breaks

  • Different page orientation (landscape/portrait mix)
  • Different margins for different parts
  • Different headers/footers
  • Different column layouts
  • Different page numbering

Preguntas Frecuentes

What's the difference between a page break and a section break?

A page break just starts a new page. A section break creates a new section that can have different margins, headers/footers, page orientation, column layout, and page numbering. Section breaks are more powerful but more complex.
