If you set a password to restrict editing (not opening), you can remove it by saving as .docx, renaming to .zip, editing word/settings.xml and removing the <w:documentProtection> element. If it's an open password, there's no built-in way to recover it.

Types of Word Password Protection

Word has two types of protection, and the recovery method differs:

  1. Open password: Required to open the file (strong encryption, very difficult to bypass)
  2. Editing restriction: Allows reading but restricts editing (can be removed)

Removing Editing Restrictions

Method 1: ZIP/XML Method

  1. Make a copy of the file
  2. Rename the copy from .docx to .zip
  3. Open the ZIP file
  4. Navigate to the word folder
  5. Open settings.xml in a text editor
  6. Find the <w:documentProtection> element and delete it entirely
  7. Save settings.xml back into the ZIP
  8. Rename the .zip back to .docx
  9. Open the file — editing restrictions should be removed

Method 2: VBA Method

  1. Open the file in Word (it opens in read-only)
  2. Press Alt+F11 to open the VBA editor
  3. Go to Tools > Macro
  4. This method has limitations and may not work on all protection types

For Open Password (Cannot Open File)

If you can’t open the file at all:

  1. Try common passwords: Try passwords you typically use
  2. Check email: Search your email for when the file was sent — the password may be in a message
  3. Check password manager: Look in your password manager for notes
  4. Contact the sender: If someone sent you the file, ask for the password
  5. IT department: Your organization’s IT may have recovery tools

  • Use a password manager to store document passwords
  • Avoid password-protecting files unless necessary
  • For collaboration, use OneDrive/SharePoint permissions instead of document passwords
