Select the text, press Ctrl+Space to clear character formatting, then apply the style again. If styles look wrong, right-click the style and choose 'Update [Style] to Match Selection' or 'Modify' to edit it.

Why Styles Don’t Apply Correctly

Word’s style system has a hierarchy: document styles can be overridden by direct formatting. When you manually change fonts, sizes, or spacing, those changes take priority over the style definition.

Étapes de résolution

Step 1: Clear Direct Formatting

  1. Select the problem text
  2. Press Ctrl+Space to clear character-level direct formatting (font, size, bold, etc.)
  3. Press Ctrl+Q to clear paragraph-level direct formatting (spacing, indentation)
  4. The text should now reflect the pure style definition

Step 2: Reapply the Style

  1. With the text selected, click the desired style in the Styles gallery
  2. If the style still looks wrong, the style definition itself may be modified

Step 3: Reset a Modified Style

  1. Right-click the style in the Styles gallery
  2. Select Modify
  3. Click Format at the bottom left to check font, paragraph, and other settings
  4. Make corrections and click OK
  5. Check Automatically update only if you want the style to change whenever you format text with that style

Step 4: Reset All Styles to Default

If styles are thoroughly corrupted:

  1. Close the document
  2. Press Windows + R, type %appdata%\Microsoft\Templates
  3. Delete Normal.dotm
  4. Reopen Word — all default styles are restored

Best Practices

  • Always use styles instead of direct formatting
  • Create custom styles for recurring formatting needs
  • Don’t check “Automatically update” unless you understand the implications
  • Use Ctrl+Shift+N to apply Normal style as a quick reset

Questions Fréquemment Posées

Why do my styles look different from what I expect?

Styles can be overridden by direct formatting (manual font changes). Direct formatting takes priority over style formatting. Clear it with Ctrl+Space for character formatting or Ctrl+Q for paragraph formatting before applying the style.
