Recovering Corrupted Documents

Document corruption can happen from crashes, sync issues, storage problems, or software bugs. Here are multiple recovery methods, from simplest to most advanced.

Method 1: Open and Repair

1. Open Microsoft Word (don’t open the file directly)
2. Go to File > Open > Browse
3. Navigate to the corrupted file
4. Click the dropdown arrow next to the Open button
5. Select Open and Repair
6. Save the repaired document with a new name

Method 2: Insert Into New Document

1. Create a new blank document
2. Go to Insert > Object dropdown > Text from File
3. Select the corrupted file
4. The content imports without the corrupted elements

Method 3: Recover Text from Any File

1. Go to File > Open > Browse
2. In the file type dropdown, select Recover Text from Any File (.)
3. Select the corrupted file and click Open
4. You’ll get plain text without formatting

Method 4: Extract from ZIP

Since .docx files are ZIP archives:

1. Make a copy of the corrupted file
2. Change the extension from .docx to .zip
3. Open the ZIP file
4. Navigate to the word folder
5. Open document.xml in a text editor
6. Your text is between the XML tags — copy what you need

Method 5: Use Previous Versions

1. Right-click the file in File Explorer
2. Select Properties > Previous Versions tab
3. If versions are available, select one and click Restore

Method 6: Check OneDrive/SharePoint Version History

If the file is cloud-synced:

1. Go to OneDrive.com or SharePoint
2. Right-click the file > Version history
3. Download a previous, uncorrupted version

Prévention

• Enable AutoSave for OneDrive files
• Save important documents to multiple locations
• Don’t remove USB drives while Word is saving
• Use Ctrl+S frequently during editing sessions
