Check for section breaks (Ctrl+Shift+8 to show). Each section can have independent headers/footers. Double-click the header/footer and check if 'Link to Previous' is enabled — it should be ON if you want the same header across sections.
Understanding Headers and Sections
Word’s header/footer system is tied to sections. Each section can have its own headers and footers. The “Link to Previous” setting controls whether a section inherits the previous section’s header.

Problem: Same Header Needed on All Pages
- Double-click the header on the first page
- For each subsequent section, check Link to Previous is ON (highlighted)
- Edit the header on the first page — linked sections will update automatically
Problem: Different First Page Header
- Double-click the header
- In the Header & Footer tab, check Different First Page
- Edit the first page header separately from the rest
Problem: Different Odd/Even Page Headers
- Double-click the header
- Check Different Odd & Even Pages
- Edit odd-page and even-page headers separately
Problem: Section Breaks Causing Unwanted Header Changes
- Show formatting marks: Ctrl+Shift+8
- Find the section break(s) between pages with different headers
- Either delete the section break, or:
- Double-click the header after the section break
- Enable Link to Previous to inherit the previous section’s header
How to Have a Completely Different Header on One Page
- Place your cursor at the end of the page BEFORE where you want the different header
- Go to Layout > Breaks > Section Breaks > Next Page
- Do the same at the end of the special page
- Double-click the header on the special page
- Uncheck Link to Previous
- Edit the header
- On the page AFTER, also uncheck Link to Previous and set up its header

Why does my header change after a page break?
If you used a Section Break (not a Page Break), each section can have its own header. Check if 'Link to Previous' is unchecked in the Header & Footer toolbar. If so, the sections have independent headers.
