Fixing Cross-Reference Errors

Cross-references are links to other elements in your document (headings, figures, tables, page numbers). They break when the target is deleted or the document structure changes.

Step 1: Update All Fields

1. Press Ctrl+A to select the entire document
2. Press F9 to update all fields
3. Check if cross-references now show correct information

Step 2: Fix “Error! Reference source not found”

This means the target was deleted:

1. Find the error in your document
2. Delete the broken cross-reference text
3. Go to References > Cross-reference
4. Select the correct reference type and target
5. Click Insert

Step 3: Fix Wrong Numbers

If cross-references show wrong figure/table numbers:

1. First, check that your captions are correct:
   • Click each caption and verify the number
   • If captions are wrong, select all (Ctrl+A) and press F9
2. Then update cross-references:
   • Select all (Ctrl+A) and press F9 again

Step 4: Prevent Future Errors

• Always use References > Insert Caption for figure and table numbers (not manual typing)
• Always use References > Cross-reference to reference them
• Update all fields (Ctrl+A, F9) before printing or exporting to PDF
• Don’t manually edit cross-reference text — it will revert on update

Types of Cross-References

• Heading: Reference a heading by text or page number
• Numbered Item: Reference a numbered paragraph
• Bookmark: Reference a bookmarked location
• Footnote/Endnote: Reference a note number
• Figure/Table/Equation: Reference a captioned item
