Fixing Endnote Problems

Endnotes should appear at the end of your document, but section breaks and settings can cause them to appear elsewhere or not at all.

Problem: Endnotes Appear at End of Each Section

1. Go to References tab
2. Click the Footnote/Endnote dialog launcher (small arrow in bottom-right)
3. Under Endnotes, change location from End of section to End of document
4. Click Apply (applies to all sections)

Problem: Endnotes Don’t Appear At All

1. Check if you accidentally inserted footnotes instead of endnotes
2. Go to References > Insert Endnote (not Insert Footnote)
3. To convert existing footnotes to endnotes:
   • Click the Footnote/Endnote dialog launcher
   • Click Convert
   • Select Convert all footnotes to endnotes
   • Click OK

Problem: Endnote Numbering Wrong

1. Open the Footnote/Endnote dialog
2. Under Number format, choose the correct format
3. Under Numbering, select:
   • Continuous for unbroken numbering
   • Restart each section if needed
4. Click Apply

Problem: Endnote Formatting Wrong

1. In Draft view (View > Draft), go to References > Show Notes
2. The endnote pane opens at the bottom
3. Select endnote text and format as needed
4. To change the default style: modify the Endnote Text style in the Styles pane
