Why Images Move in Word

Images in Word are anchored to paragraphs. When you edit text and paragraphs move, the anchored image moves with them. Understanding anchoring and text wrapping is the key to controlling image placement.

Option 1: In Line with Text (Simplest)

1. Click the image
2. Go to Picture Format > Wrap Text > In Line with Text
3. The image now behaves like a large character — it moves with the text but never jumps to another page

Option 2: Fixed Position on Page

1. Click the image
2. Click the Layout Options icon that appears (small square with lines)
3. Select a text wrapping style (Square, Tight, etc.)
4. Click Fix position on page
5. The image stays exactly where you placed it

Option 3: Lock the Anchor

For maximum control:

1. Click the image
2. Go to Picture Format > Position > More Layout Options
3. On the Position tab:
   • Set horizontal and vertical position relative to Page or Margin
   • Check Lock anchor
4. On the Text Wrapping tab, choose your preferred wrapping style
5. Click OK

Understanding Anchors

• Every image has an invisible anchor attached to a paragraph
• Show anchors: File > Options > Display > check ‘Object anchors’
• You can drag the anchor to a different paragraph to change which paragraph the image follows
• Locking the anchor prevents it from being moved accidentally

Best Practices for Academic Documents

• Use In Line with Text for figures that should appear in sequence
• Add captions via References > Insert Caption for numbered figures
• Use text wrapping: Top and Bottom for full-width images between paragraphs
