Fixing Table Problems
Tables in Word can become difficult to manage, especially when cells won’t resize, borders disappear, or alignment goes wrong.

Problem: Columns Won’t Resize
- Select the entire table
- Right-click > AutoFit > AutoFit to Contents or AutoFit to Window
- For manual control: right-click > Table Properties > Column tab
- Set specific widths for each column
Problem: Table Extends Beyond Page Margins
- Select the table
- Right-click > AutoFit > AutoFit to Window
- Or: Table Properties > Table tab > set Preferred width to 100% in percent
Problem: Cell Text Not Aligning
- Select the cells
- Go to Table Layout > Alignment group
- Choose from the 9 alignment options (top-left, center-center, etc.)
Problem: Borders Missing or Wrong
- Select the table
- Go to Table Design > Borders dropdown
- Click All Borders to reapply standard borders
- For custom borders: Borders > Borders and Shading dialog
Problem: Table Splits Across Pages
To keep a row from splitting:
- Select the table
- Right-click > Table Properties > Row tab
- Uncheck Allow row to break across pages
To repeat header row on each page:
- Select the header row
- Go to Table Layout > Repeat Header Rows
Problem: Can’t Select or Edit Table
- Try clicking in the margin to the left of the table
- Use Alt+5 on the numeric keypad (with Num Lock off) to select the table
