Why does my font change when I press Enter?

The paragraph style's 'Style for following paragraph' setting controls this. Right-click the style > Modify > check the 'Style for following paragraph' dropdown. It might switch to a style with a different font.

Word uses a style-based formatting system. When fonts change on their own, it’s usually because of style definitions, paste operations, or template settings.

Problem: Font Changes When Pressing Enter

Right-click the current style in the Styles gallery
Click Modify
Check the Style for following paragraph dropdown at the bottom
Make sure it’s set to the same style (or a style with the same font)

Problem: Font Changes When Pasting

Go to File > Options > Advanced
Under Cut, copy, and paste
Set paste options to Keep Text Only or Match Destination Formatting

Problem: Font Reverts After Saving/Reopening

Right-click the style you’re using > Modify
Set the correct font
Check New documents based on this template at the bottom
Click OK — this saves the change to your template

Problem: Font Not Available

If a document uses a font not installed on your computer:

Word substitutes a similar font
To fix: install the required font
Or select all text (Ctrl+A) and change to an available font

Set Default Font for All New Documents

Go to Home > Font dialog launcher (small arrow in bottom-right of Font group)
Set your desired font, size, and style
Click Set As Default
Choose All documents based on the Normal.dotm template
Click OK
