Why does my watermark only appear on some pages?

Watermarks are per-section in Word. If your document has section breaks with different headers, you need to add the watermark to each section separately.

Why Watermarks Don’t Appear

Watermarks in Word are actually inserted into the header layer. Issues arise when headers are different per section, or when the watermark is behind opaque objects.

Step 1: Reinsert the Watermark

Go to Design > Watermark
Choose a preset (DRAFT, CONFIDENTIAL, etc.)
Or click Custom Watermark for text or image watermarks

Step 2: Check Section Breaks

If the watermark only appears on some pages:

Show formatting marks with Ctrl+Shift+8
Identify section breaks
Double-click the header on a page where the watermark is missing
Check if Link to Previous is enabled
If disabled, add the watermark to that section’s header manually

Step 3: Access the Watermark for Editing

Double-click the header area at the top of any page
The watermark should become selectable (it appears faded)
Click it to move, resize, or modify it
Close the header/footer when done

Step 4: Watermark Not Printing

Go to File > Options > Display
Under Printing options, check Print background colors and images
Also check your printer’s quality settings — draft mode may skip watermarks

Custom Watermarks

For a custom text watermark:

Go to Design > Watermark > Custom Watermark
Select Text watermark
Type your text, choose font, size, color, and layout (diagonal or horizontal)
Click OK
