Fix: Word Features Missing or Grayed Out

Why Features Are Unavailable

Grayed-out features in Word always have a specific cause. Here are the most common ones and their fixes.

Cause 1: Compatibility Mode

1. Check the title bar for “[Compatibility Mode]”
2. Go to File > Info > Convert
3. Click OK to convert to modern format
4. All modern features become available

Cause 2: Document Protection

1. Go to Review > Restrict Editing
2. If protection is active, click Stop Protection
3. Enter the protection password if required
4. Editing features become available

Cause 3: Read-Only Mode

1. Check the title bar for “[Read-Only]”
2. Go to File > Save As and save to a new location
3. Or click Enable Editing in the yellow bar at the top

Cause 4: Office Version Limitation

Some features require Microsoft 365 (subscription):

1. Go to File > Account to check your version
2. Features like real-time co-authoring, AI tools, and some design features require Microsoft 365
3. Consider upgrading from a one-time purchase to a subscription

Cause 5: Wrong View Mode

Some features are view-dependent:

1. Print Layout has all features (View > Print Layout)
2. Draft view disables some layout features
3. Read Mode disables all editing features
4. Outline view shows outline-specific features

Cause 6: Nothing Selected

Many features require a selection:

1. Table features require clicking inside a table
2. Picture features require selecting an image
3. Chart features require selecting a chart
4. Header/Footer features require double-clicking the header area
