Fix: Footnotes in Wrong Position or Format in Word

Fixing Footnote Problems

Footnotes can behave unexpectedly when they’re long, when pages have complex layouts, or when document sections have different settings.

Problem: Footnotes on Wrong Page

1. This happens when the footnote text is too long for the current page
2. Word splits the footnote across pages
3. To prevent splitting: go to References > Footnote dialog launcher
4. Under Location, verify Bottom of page is selected
5. If the footnote is very long, consider using an endnote instead

Problem: Footnote Numbering Restarts

1. Go to References > Footnote dialog launcher
2. Under Numbering, select Continuous instead of Restart each section or Restart each page
3. Click Apply

Problem: Wrong Footnote Format

1. Go to Home > Styles dialog launcher (small arrow)
2. Click Options and show All styles
3. Find Footnote Text and Footnote Reference styles
4. Right-click each and select Modify to change font, size, spacing

Problem: Footnote Separator Line

1. Switch to Draft view (View > Draft)
2. Go to References > Show Notes
3. In the footnote pane dropdown, select Footnote Separator
4. Edit or delete the separator line

Footnote Best Practices

• Keep footnotes brief — long footnotes disrupt page layout
• Use endnotes for lengthy annotations
• For academic papers, check your style guide’s footnote requirements
• Avoid placing footnotes inside tables (they may not display correctly)
