Fixing Page Number Problems

Page numbering issues usually stem from section breaks, linked headers/footers, or formatting conflicts.

Problem: Page Numbers Don’t Start at 1

1. Click where you want numbering to start
2. Go to Layout > Breaks > Section Breaks > Next Page
3. Double-click the header or footer on the new section
4. Uncheck Link to Previous in the Header & Footer tab
5. Go to Insert > Page Number > Format Page Numbers
6. Select Start at: 1
7. Close the header/footer

Problem: Page Numbers Are Missing

1. Go to Insert > Page Number
2. Choose your preferred position (top, bottom, margins)
3. Select a number format
4. If they still don’t appear, double-click the header/footer and check that the page number field exists

Problem: Wrong Page Numbers After a Section Break

1. Double-click the header/footer in the problem section
2. Check if Link to Previous is on or off
3. Go to Insert > Page Number > Format Page Numbers
4. Choose Continue from previous section or Start at a specific number
5. Repeat for each section

Problem: Page Numbers Appear on the First Page

1. Double-click the header/footer
2. In the Header & Footer tab, check Different First Page
3. The first page header/footer becomes independent — delete the page number from it

Understanding Section Breaks

Each section in Word can have its own page numbering. When sections are “linked,” they share numbering. When unlinked, they’re independent. Most page number problems come from incorrect linking between sections.
