Fix: Word Document Opens in Compatibility Mode

What Is Compatibility Mode?

When you see “[Compatibility Mode]” in the title bar, Word has limited its features to match an older document format.

Step 1: Convert the Document

Open the document in Word
Go to File > Info
Click Convert
Click OK in the dialog box
Save the document — it’s now in the latest .docx format

Step 2: Save As Modern Format (Alternative)

Go to File > Save As
Choose Word Document (.docx) as the format
Save with the same or new filename

Step 3: Set Default Format for New Documents

Go to File > Options > Save
Under Save files in this format, select Word Document (.docx)
Click OK

When to Keep Compatibility Mode

When sharing with users who have Word 2003 or earlier
When a specific institution requires .doc format
When the document uses legacy features that don’t convert well
