Fix: Citation Sources Missing in Word

El Problema

Your Word citaciones display as blanks, question marks, or partial information. Citation placeholders show ”[?]” or “[source not found].” When you hover over citaciones, source details don’t appear. Bibliography shows sources as incomplete or missing. Moving documento to new computer breaks citaciones. Citations referencia sources that no longer exist in the documento.

Solución Rápida

Restore missing sources immediately:

  1. Vaya a References > Administrar Sources (or Insert > Citation > Administrar Sources)
  2. The Source Manager cuadro de diálogo opens
  3. Left side shows “Master List” (all available sources)
  4. Right side shows “Current List” (sources in this documento)
  5. Look in Current List for citaciones with missing sources
  6. If Current List is empty, no sources exist
  7. To restore:
    • In Master List, find the source
    • Haga clic en it to select
    • Haga clic en Copy botón
    • Source moves to Current List
  8. If source not in Master List, create new:
    • Haga clic en New
    • Enter source information
    • Haga clic en OK
  9. Repeat for all missing sources

Solución Paso a Paso

Step 1: Abra Source Manager

Access all sources and citaciones.

  1. Vaya a References pestaña in ribbon
  2. Haga clic en Administrar Sources or Citation Sources botón (may be labeled diferentely)
  3. Or go to Insert > Citation > Administrar Sources
  4. The Source Manager cuadro de diálogo opens
  5. Two lists appear:
    • Master List (left): All sources ever created on this computer
    • Current List (right): Sources used in current documento

Step 2: Identify Missing Sources

  1. In Current List (right side), look for sources with missing info

  3. Details appear below:
    • Author
    • Title
    • Year
    • Other campos
  4. If details are blank or incomplete, source information is missing

Step 3: Complete Missing Source Information

Fill in details for incomplete sources.

  1. In Current List, select a source with missing info
  2. Haga clic en Edit botón (middle area between lists)

    • Author: Enter author name
    • Title: Enter title
    • Year: Enter publication year
    • Publisher: Enter publisher
    • URL: Enter web address if applicable

  7. Repeat for other incomplete sources

Step 4: Add Missing Sources from Master List

Sources exist in Master List but not in Current List.

  1. In Master List (left side), look for sources you need
  2. To search, use the search box above Master List
  3. Haga clic en source to select it
  4. Haga clic en Copy botón (middle area between lists)
  5. Source moves to Current List
  6. Repeat for all needed sources
  7. Now citaciones can referencia these sources
  8. Close Source Manager
  9. Citations should display correctly

Step 5: Create New Source If Not Found

Source doesn’t exist; create it.

  1. In Source Manager, ensure Current List is displayed
  2. Haga clic en New botón
  3. The Create Source cuadro de diálogo opens
  4. In Escriba of Source, choose the correct type:
    • Book
    • Journal Article
    • Website
    • Etc.
  5. Fill in all relevant campos:
    • Author/Editor: Enter name(s)
    • Title: Enter title
    • Year: Enter publication year
    • Publication Information: Publisher, URL, etc.
  6. Haga clic en OK
  7. New source is created and added to Current List
  8. Repeat for each missing source

Step 6: Fix Citations Referencing Wrong Source

Citation might be set to referencia source that was deleted.

  3. Seleccione each placeholder
  4. Haga clic en Edit
  5. Complete ALL required campos
  6. Haga clic en OK
  7. Placeholder status removed
  8. Placeholder citaciones now display correctly

Step 8: Export and Import Source List

If moving documento to new computer, sources don’t transfer.

To export sources (before moving):

  1. On original computer, open Source Manager
  2. In Master List, select all sources (Ctrl+A)
  3. Look for “Copy All” or “Export” opción (varies by Word versión)
  4. Copy sources
  5. Save a copy of the master source list (if export available)

To import sources (on new computer):

  1. On new computer, open Source Manager
  2. Look for “Import” opción
  3. Seleccione source list archivo from original computer
  4. Import loads all sources

Step 9: Restore from Backup Document

If you have earlier versión of documento:

  1. Abra the earlier versión on original computer
  2. Abra Source Manager
  3. All sources should appear in Master List

  6. Citations now have source information

Step 10: Update Bibliography and All Fields

After restoring sources:

  1. Vaya a References > Bibliography
  2. Haga clic en existing bibliografía (if present) or insert new
  3. Bibliography actualizacións to show all sources
  4. To ensure complete refresh:
    • Seleccione all: Ctrl+A
    • Presione Ctrl+Shift+F9 (actualización all campos)
  5. All citaciones and bibliografía now current
