Fix: Compare Documents Not Working in Word
Respuesta Rápida
Vaya a Review > Compare > Combine. Seleccione both documentoos. Ensure archivos are saved, closed, not dañado, and same or compatible format.
El Problema
Word’s Compare Documents feature isn’t working. You try to go to Review > Compare > Combine, select two archivos, but nothing happens or an error appears. The comparación cuadro de diálogo hangs or closes without creating comparación. You need to see all diferencias between two versións but Word’s Compare feature is broken. Files are incompatible format or the feature can’t find them.
Solución Rápida
Ensure both documentoos are saved and closed:
- Save both documentoos you want to compare: Presione Ctrl+S in each
- Close all Word documentoos: Archivo > Close All
- Vaya a Review pestaña in ribbon
- Haga clic en Compare (dropdown arrow next to Compare botón)
- Seleccione Compare or Combine (Combine is for merging edits)
- In the cuadro de diálogo:
- Original documento: Browse to your first documento
- Revised documento: Browse to your second documento
- Haga clic en OK (not “More Opciones” for now)
- Wait 10-30 seconds (comparación takes time for large documentoos)
- A new documento opens showing all diferencias as tracked changes
If this doesn’t work, proceed to Solución Paso a Paso.
Solución Paso a Paso
Step 1: Close All Abra Word Documents
Abra documentoos interfere with Compare function.
- Close all Word documentoos:
- Archivo > Close All or close each individually
- Verify Word ventana is empty
- Don’t close Word itself—keep the application open
- Now open Compare function: Review > Compare > Compare
Step 2: Choose Correct Document Locations
Files must be saved before comparing.
- In Compare cuadro de diálogo, click “Original documento” carpeta icon
- Navigate to where your first documento is saved
- Double-click the archivo to select it (or click once and click “Abra”)
- Important: Don’t open the archivo—just select it
- The archivoname appears in the “Original documento” campo
- Now click “Revised documento” carpeta icon
- Navigate to your second documento
- Seleccione it the same way
- Both archivonames now show in the cuadro de diálogo
- Haga clic en OK
Step 3: Marque Archivo Compatibility
Documents must be in compatible formats.
- Both archivos should be:
- Word documentoos (.docx, .doc, .docm)
- Not PDF, not image, not other format
- Verify archivo extensions:
- Haga clic con el botón derecho en each archivo > Properties
- Marque the “Escriba” campo
- Both should say “Microsoft Word Document” or similar
- If one is PDF:
- You can’t compare directly to PDF
- Convert PDF to Word first (special tools required)
- Or use alternative comparación method (Step 10)
Step 4: Verify Files Are Not Abra or Locked
Files in use can’t be compared.
- Marque if documentoos are open:
- If they are, close them (Archivo > Close)
- Don’t save if you don’t want to
- Marque if archivos are locked by another user:
- Haga clic con el botón derecho en the archivo
- If read-only or locked icon appears, wait for other user to close
- Try Compare again once archivos are closed
Step 5: Save Unsaved Documents First
Unsaved documentoos can’t be compared reliably.
- If you want to compare an unsaved documento:
- Save it first: Ctrl+S or Archivo > Save
- Give it a archivoname
- Choose a location
- Haga clic en Save
- Repeat for the second documento
- Close both documentoos
- Now try Compare again with the saved versións
Step 6: Use Archivo Path if Documents Won’t Seleccione
Sometimes archivo browser doesn’t show documentoos.
- In Compare cuadro de diálogo, instead of using carpeta browser
- Haga clic con el botón derecho en in the “Original documento” campo
- Paste documento path if you have it
- Or type the full path:
C:\Users\YourName\Documents\Document1.docx - Do same for “Revised documento”
- Haga clic en OK
Step 7: Try Combine Instead of Compare
Combine is sometimes more reliable.
- Vaya a Review > Compare > Combine (instead of Compare)
- Combine is designed for merging edits from multiple reviewers
- Seleccione documentoos same as Compare
- Combine shows diferencias but is optimized for merging tracked changes
- Some users find Combine works when Compare fails
Step 8: Habilite More Opciones If Basic Compare Fails
Avanzado opcións can help with difficult documentoos.
- Abra Compare cuadro de diálogo: Review > Compare > Compare
- Seleccione documentoos as usual
- Before clicking OK, click “More Opciones” or “Show More Opciones” (bottom left)
- Additional settings appear:
- Ignore formatting: Checks only text, not formatting changes
- Ignore spacing: Ignores space/pestaña diferencias
- Ignore punctuation: Ignores punctuation changes
- Desmarque opcións that aren’t relevant (focus on actual diferencias)
- Haga clic en OK
- Comparison might now succeed
Step 9: Compare Documents in Different Order
Sometimes order matters.
- If Compare fails, try reversing which archivo is “Original” and which is “Revised”
- Swap them and try again
- This occasionally fixes strange errors
- Result shows diferencias either way, just direction might differ
Step 10: Use Alternative Comparison Method
If Word Compare absolutely won’t work:
- Manual side-by-side view:
- Abra both documentoos
- Vaya a View > View Side by Side
- Scroll through and manually note diferencias
- Use Word Online comparación:
- Upload both documentoos to SharePoint
- Use SharePoint web interface > Compare versións
- Export to Google Docs and compare:
- Convert both to Google Docs
- Google Docs has built-in comparación
- Use third-party comparación tool:
- DeltaView, Diff utilities, or similar
- These often work when Word Compare fails
Step 11: Repair Office if Compare Persistently Fails
Compare feature might be dañado.
- Vaya a Panel de Control > Programs > Programas y Características
- Encuentre Microsoft Office
- Haga clic en Change
- Seleccione Reparación Rápida
- Wait for completion (2-5 minutes)
- If Compare still fails, repeat and select Reparación En Línea
- Reparación En Línea rebuilds all Office components
- Try Compare again
