Respuesta Rápida

Vaya a References > Footnote & Endnote cuadro de diálogo, click Numbering section, select Reset, then accept all tracked changes in documento.

El Problema

Your footnotes are numbered 1, 2, 4, 7 instead of 1, 2, 3, 4. Numbering jumps around after you deleted some footnotes. Footnote referencias are missing from the text but the footnote numbers exist at the bottom. Footnotes restart numbering randomly instead of continuing. Your footnote formatting is inconsistent.

Solución Rápida

Reset footnote numbering immediately:

  1. Vaya a References pestaña in the ribbon
  2. Look for Footnotes group
  3. Haga clic en the small arrow/cuadro de diálogo launcher at the bottom right of the Footnotes box
  4. In the cuadro de diálogo, look for Numbering section
  5. Haga clic en the Numbering dropdown and select Restart numbering for each section if you want per-section numbering, or Continuous for one sequence
  6. Haga clic en Reset botón (this resets to start at 1)
  7. Haga clic en OK
  8. If you have tracked changes, go to Review > Accept All Changes
  9. Your footnotes should now be numbered 1, 2, 3, 4 sequentially

If not fixed, proceed to Solución Paso a Paso.

Solución Paso a Paso

Step 1: Show Formatting Marks to See All Footnote References

Footnote referencias are más fácil to manage when visible.

  1. Abra your documento with footnote problemas
  2. Presione Ctrl + * (asterisk) to show formatting marks
  3. You now see all paragraph marks (¶) and footnote referencia marks
  4. Footnote referencias appear as superscript numbers: ¹, ², etc.
  5. If a footnote number exists but you don’t see the referencia mark, the mark is likely deleted

Step 2: Elimine All Footnotes and Recreate in Order

This is the most reliable fix for out-of-sequence footnotes.

  1. Vaya a References > Show Footnotes or Show Notes to display all footnotes at the bottom
  2. At the bottom of the page, you now see the footnote pane with all note content
  3. Starting from footnote 1, note the content you want to keep
  4. In the documento body, find the referencia mark for footnote 1 (superscript 1)
  5. Haga clic en on the referencia mark, then delete it
  6. The footnote is deleted
  7. Repeat for all footnotes: delete referencia mark, note disappears
  8. Now recreate footnotes in correct order:
    • Position cursor at first place you need a footnote
    • Vaya a References > Insert Footnote
    • Escriba the content
    • The footnote automatically numbers as 1
    • Repeat, moving through the documento in order
  9. Footnotes now number 1, 2, 3, 4 sequentially

Step 3: Use Footnote & Endnote Dialog for Avanzado Control

Access more detailed footnote settings.

  1. Vaya a References pestaña
  2. Haga clic en the small arrow at the bottom-right corner of the Footnotes group
  3. The Footnote and Endnote cuadro de diálogo opens
  4. In Location section:
    • Footnotes: set to “Bottom of page” (most common)
    • Endnotes: set to “End of documento”
  5. In Format section:
    • Number format: Choose numbering style (1, 2, 3 or i, ii, iii, etc.)
    • Custom mark: Leave blank unless using special symbols
  6. In Numbering section:
    • Seleccione Continuous to number through entire documento
    • Or select Restart numbering for each section for per-section numbering
    • Or select Restart numbering for each page for page-by-page numbering
  7. Haga clic en Apply or OK

Step 4: Accept or Reject Tracked Changes

When you modify footnotes, changes are tracked.

  1. Vaya a Review pestaña
  2. Haga clic en Accept & Reject Changes > Review Changes or Track Changes > Review Changes (location varies)
  3. A cuadro de diálogo shows each tracked change
  4. Haga clic en Accept All to accept all footnote changes at once
  5. Or Accept them one by one to review each
  6. Once accepted, footnote numbering actualizacións properly

Step 5: Fix Missing Reference Marks

If footnote numbers exist but referencia marks are invisible:

  1. Show formatting marks: **Ctrl + ***
  2. Look for footnote content at the bottom of the page (superscript numbers)
  3. In the documento body, search for places where referencia should be
  4. Haga clic en in the documento where the referencia should appear
  5. Vaya a References > Insert Footnote
  6. Word automatically creates a footnote numbered correctly
  7. If you want to restore the old content:
    • Copy content from the orphaned footnote
    • Elimine the new footnote
    • Paste the orphaned content into a new footnote

Step 6: Clean Up Section Breaks That Affect Numbering

Section breaks can cause footnote numbering to restart unexpectedly.

  1. Show formatting marks: **Ctrl + ***
  2. Look for section break markers: ¶ Section Break
  3. If you have section breaks, each one can have separate footnote numbering
  4. Haga clic en in a section
  5. Vaya a References > Footnote & Endnote cuadro de diálogo
  6. Under Numbering, choose:
    • Continuous (ignores sections)
    • Or Restart numbering for each section if intentional
  7. Haga clic en OK
  8. Repeat for each section

Step 7: Rebuild Document if Necessary

Severe footnote problemas may require rebuilding.

  1. Create a new blank documento
  2. In your broken documento, select all (Ctrl+A) but exclude footnote pane
  3. If footnotes are visible at bottom, click in documento body first, then select
  4. Copy (Ctrl+C)
  5. Abra new blank documento
  6. Paste (Ctrl+V) as unformatted text or keep formatting
  7. In the new documento, recreate footnotes properly:
    • Position cursor at each location
    • Vaya a References > Insert Footnote
    • Escriba content
  8. Save new documento
  9. Elimine old documento with footnote problemas

Por Qué Sucede Esto

  1. Deleted footnotes — When you delete a footnote referencia, remaining notes renumber, creating gaps if original numbering was tracked
  2. Cut/paste with footnotes — Moving text with footnotes creates numbering conflicts
  3. Multiple section breaks — Each section can restart numbering, causing sequence breaks
  4. Tracked changes — Deleting footnotes while tracking creates revision conflicts
  5. Corrupted documento — Extensive editing corrupts footnote internal referencias
  6. Merging documentoos — Combining multiple documentoos creates duplicate footnote numbering
  7. Endnote/footnote confusion — Mixing footnotes and endnotes creates number conflicts

Cómo Prevenirlo

  1. Insert footnotes in documento order — Don’t add out-of-order, then delete; insert in sequence
  2. Use continuous numbering — Avoid “restart per section” unless intentional
  3. Don’t manually renumber — Let Word auto-number; don’t edit superscript numbers
  4. Avoid cut/pasting content with footnotes — Elimine and recreate footnotes separately
  5. Accept tracked changes promptly — Don’t let many changes accumulate
  6. Use Encuentre & Replace carefully — Be cautious when replacing text containing footnotes
  7. Test after major edits — Verify footnote sequence after significant documento changes
  8. Keep copia de seguridad before major restructuring — Save a copy before deleting/moving large sections

Still Not Working? Soluciones Alternativas

  1. Convert to endnotes and back — References > Footnote & Endnote cuadro de diálogo > Convert > Convert all footnotes to endnotes, then convert back
  2. Elimine all footnotes, use diferente numbering — Recreate with Roman numerals or letters instead of numbers
  3. Reformat entire documento — Copy all text to new documento, apply formatting fresh
  4. Use Outline view to manage — View > Outline lets you manage structure including footnotes
  5. Separate into multiple documentoos — If very large documento, split by chapter, then link together
  6. Save as .doc then re-open as .docx — Format conversión sometimes reparacións internal corruption
  7. Contact Microsoft Support — Provide documento and detailed description of numbering issues

Puntos Clave

  • Always show formatting marks (Ctrl+*) to see footnote referencia marks clearly
  • Reset footnote numbering: References > Footnote & Endnote cuadro de diálogo > Numbering > Reset
  • Accept all tracked changes after modifying footnotes
  • Deleting footnotes is the most reliable way to fix out-of-sequence numbering
  • Choose “Continuous” numbering unless you need per-section restart
  • If rebuilding fails, creating a new documento and copying content is nuclear opción
  • Footnotes can restart per section, per page, or continuous—choose intentionally
