Fix: Compare Documents Not Working in Word
Réponse Rapide
Go to Review > Compare > Combine. Select both documents. Ensure files are saved, closed, not corrupted, and same or compatible format.
Le problème
Word’s Compare Documents feature isn’t working. You try to go to Révision > Compare > Combine, select two files, but nothing happens or an error s’affiche. The comparison dialog hangs or closes without creating comparison. You need to see all differences between two versions but Word’s Compare feature is broken. Fichiers are incompatible format or the feature can’t find them.
Solution rapide
Assurez-vous both documents are saved and closed:
- Save both documents you want to compare: Press Ctrl+S in each
- Close all Word documents: Fichier > Close All
- Allez à Révision tab in ribbon
- Cliquez Compare (dropdown arrow next to Compare button)
- Sélectionnez Compare or Combine (Combine is for merging edits)
- In the dialog:
- Original document: Browse to your first document
- Revised document: Browse to your second document
- Cliquez OK (not “More Options” for now)
- Wait 10-30 seconds (comparison takes time for large documents)
- A new document opens showing all differences as tracked changes
If this doesn’t work, proceed to Solution étape par étape.
Solution étape par étape
Step 1: Close All Open Word Documents
Open documents interfere with Compare function.
- Close all Word documents:
- Fichier > Close All or close each individually
- Verify Word window is empty
- Don’t close Word itself—keep the application open
- Maintenant open Compare function: Révision > Compare > Compare
Step 2: Choose Correct Document Locations
Fichiers must be saved before comparing.
- In Compare dialog, click “Original document” folder icon
- Navigate to where your first document is saved
- Double-cliquez the file to select it (or click once and click “Open”)
- Important: Don’t open the file—just select it
- The filename s’affiche in the “Original document” field
- Maintenant click “Revised document” folder icon
- Navigate to your second document
- Sélectionnez it the same way
- Both filenames now show in the dialog
- Cliquez OK
Step 3: Vérifiez Fichier Compatibility
Documents must be in compatible formats.
- Both files should be:
- Word documents (.docx, .doc, .docm)
- Not PDF, not image, not other format
- Verify file extensions:
- Cliquez avec le bouton droit each file > Properties
- Vérifiez the “Type” field
- Both should say “Microsoft Word Document” or similar
- If one is PDF:
- You can’t compare directly to PDF
- Convert PDF to Word first (special tools required)
- Or use alternative comparison method (Step 10)
Step 4: Verify Fichiers Are Not Open or Locked
Fichiers in use can’t be compared.
- Vérifiez if documents are open:
- If they are, close them (Fichier > Close)
- Don’t save if you don’t want to
- Vérifiez if files are locked by another user:
- Cliquez avec le bouton droit the file
- If read-only or locked icon s’affiche, wait for other user to close
- Essayez Compare again once files are closed
Step 5: Save Unsaved Documents First
Unsaved documents can’t be compared reliably.
- If you want to compare an unsaved document:
- Save it first: Ctrl+S or Fichier > Save
- Give it a filename
- Choose a location
- Cliquez Save
- Répétez for the second document
- Close both documents
- Maintenant try Compare again with the saved versions
Step 6: Use Fichier Path if Documents Won’t Sélectionnez
Sometimes file browser doesn’t show documents.
- In Compare dialog, instead of using folder browser
- Cliquez avec le bouton droit in the “Original document” field
- Collez document path if you have it
- Or type the full path:
C:\Users\YourName\Documents\Document1.docx - Do same for “Revised document”
- Cliquez OK
Step 7: Essayez Combine Instead of Compare
Combine is sometimes more reliable.
- Allez à Révision > Compare > Combine (instead of Compare)
- Combine is designed for merging edits from multiple reviewers
- Sélectionnez documents same as Compare
- Combine shows differences but is optimized for merging tracked changes
- Some users find Combine works when Compare fails
Step 8: Activez More Options If Basic Compare Fails
Advanced options can help with difficult documents.
- Open Compare dialog: Révision > Compare > Compare
- Sélectionnez documents as usual
- Before clicking OK, click “More Options” or “Show More Options” (bottom left)
- Additional settings appear:
- Ignore formatting: Vérifiezs only text, not formatting changes
- Ignore spacing: Ignores space/tab differences
- Ignore punctuation: Ignores punctuation changes
- Uncheck options that aren’t relevant (focus on actual differences)
- Cliquez OK
- Comparison might now succeed
Step 9: Compare Documents in Different Order
Sometimes order matters.
- If Compare fails, try reversing which file is “Original” and which is “Revised”
- Swap them and try again
- This occasionally fixes strange errors
- Result shows differences either way, just direction might differ
Step 10: Use Alternative Comparison Method
If Word Compare absolutely won’t work:
- Manual side-by-side view:
- Open both documents
- Allez à Affichage > Affichage Side by Side
- Scroll through and manually note differences
- Use Word Online comparison:
- Upload both documents to SharePoint
- Use SharePoint web interface > Compare versions
- Export to Google Docs and compare:
- Convert both to Google Docs
- Google Docs has built-in comparison
- Use third-party comparison tool:
- DeltaAffichage, Diff utilities, or similar
- These often work when Word Compare fails
Step 11: Repair Office if Compare Persistently Fails
Compare feature might be corrupted.
- Allez à Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features
- Find Microsoft Office
- Cliquez Change
- Sélectionnez Quick Repair
- Wait for completion (2-5 minutes)
- If Compare still fails, repeat and select Online Repair
- Online Repair rebuilds all Office components
- Essayez Compare again
Pourquoi cela se produit
- Documents still open — Open documents interfere with Compare
- Fichier not saved — Unsaved documents can’t be compared
- Incompatible format — One file is PDF, image, or non-Word format
- Fichier locked by another user — Fichier in use prevents comparison
- Corrupted document — One or both files have internal corruption
- Compare feature bug — Older Office versions have Compare bugs
- Path or filename issues — Special characters or very long paths break file selection
- Insufficient disk space — Comparison creates temporary files; needs space
Comment l’éviter
- Save both documents first — Never compare unsaved files
- Close documents before comparing — Don’t compare open files
- Verify compatible format — Both must be .docx, .doc, or .docm
- Use meaningful filenames — Avoid special characters in filenames
- Keep Office updated — Mettez à jours fix Compare bugs
- Test Compare early — Don’t wait until critical moment
- Maintain backup copies — Keep originals before making changes
- Use version control — For extensive revisions, use Track Changes instead of Compare
Toujours pas de résultat ? Solutions alternatives
- Side-by-side view — Affichage > Affichage Side by Side shows both documents at once
- Track Changes approach — Instead of Compare, use Track Changes on one document
- Google Docs comparison — Upload to Google Docs, use their comparison feature
- Diff/patch tools — Command-line tools like diff (Windows/Mac) for comparing text
- Visual comparison software — Beyond Compare, Araxis Merge, or WinDiff
- Manual line-by-line review — Open both documents, read each line carefully
- Réinstallez Office — Complete uninstall and fresh install
- Contact Microsoft Support — For persistent feature failures
