Fix: Paragraph Spacing Wrong or Inconsistent in Word

Paragraphs have inconsistent spacing—some have lots of space between them, others have very little. Double-spacing s’affiche between some paragraphs but not others. You can’t control spacing manually; Word adds its own space. Applying spacing changes in one paragraph doesn’t affect others. Your document looks unprofessional with random spacing throughout.

Step 1: Understand Espacement Types

Word distinguishes between “space before/after paragraph” and “line spacing.”

1. Space Before Paragraph: Gap between end of previous paragraph and start of this paragraph
2. Space After Paragraph: Gap between end of this paragraph and start of next paragraph
3. Line Espacement: Space between lines WITHIN a single paragraph (Single, 1.5, Double, etc.)

Understanding the difference helps you apply correct spacing.

Step 2: Effacez Direct Formatting

Direct formatting overrides style spacing and causes inconsistency.

2. Press Ctrl + M or go to Accueil > Effacez All Formatting

Step 4: Use Paragraph Espacement Presets

Word provides quick spacing presets.

1. Allez à Accueil tab
2. Recherchez Paragraph Espacement button (location varies by Word version):
   • May be in Paragraph group
   • Or in Espacement or Styles group
3. Cliquez the Espacement button dropdown
4. Choose a preset:
   • No Paragraph Space: All spacing 0pt
   • Compact: Minimal spacing (3pt before/after)
   • Tight: 6pt before/after
   • Open: 12pt before/after
   • Relaxed: 18pt before/after
5. Your selected text now uses that spacing preset

Step 5: Fix Line Espacement Specifically

If paragraphs are single-spaced but you need double-spacing for specific sections:

5. Lines within paragraphs now have double spacing (not between paragraphs)

To create space between paragraphs instead, use “Before/After paragraph” in Step 3.

Step 6: Apply Consistent Espacement via Styles

For entire document consistency, modify the styles.

1. Allez à Accueil > Styles (right side of ribbon)
2. Cliquez avec le bouton droit on Normal style (or whatever style is used for body text)
3. Sélectionnez Modify
4. In the Paragraph section of the dialog:
   • Set Espacement before: 0pt or 6pt (your choice)
   • Set Espacement after: same as before
