Fix: Table of Figures Wrong or Not Updating in Word
Réponse Rapide
Ensure all figures have captions (Insert > Caption). Delete table of figures, recreate via References > Table of Figures. Update with Ctrl+Shift+F9.
Le problème
Your Tableau of Figures is empty or includes wrong figures. New figures you added don’t appear in the table. The table shows items from other documents or deleted figures. Page numbers in the table are wrong. Tableau of Figures was working but stopped after editing.
Solution rapide
Mettez à jour the table immediately:
- Cliquez in the Tableau of Figures
- Cliquez avec le bouton droit it
- Sélectionnez Mettez à jour Field
- A dialog asks how to update (page numbers only or entire table)
- Choose “Mettez à jour entire table”
- Cliquez OK
- The table refreshes with latest figures
If it’s still wrong, proceed to Solution étape par étape.
Solution étape par étape
Step 1: Understand What Tableau of Figures Includes
Tableau of Figures only shows captioned items.
- In your document, look at every figure/image
- Cliquez avec le bouton droit each figure
- If you see “Insérer Caption,” the figure isn’t captioned
- If you see “Édition Caption,” the figure IS captioned
- The Tableau of Figures shows ONLY figures with captions
- All other images/figures are excluded
Step 2: Add Missing Captions
Figures without captions won’t appear in table.
- Cliquez avec le bouton droit a figure that should be in the table but isn’t
- Sélectionnez Insérer Caption
- A Caption dialog opens
- It should show:
- Label: Figure (or “Figure”)
- Number: Auto-numbered
- Position: Below selected item
- Édition the caption text if desired (e.g., “Figure 1: My Graphique”)
- Cliquez OK
- Caption s’affiche below the figure
- Répétez for every figure that needs to be in table
Step 3: Verify All Figures Have Same Label Type
Tableau of Figures shows captions with specific label only.
- Look at existing captions
- Vérifiez the label used (should be “Figure,” not “Illustration,” “Image,” etc.)
- If some captions use “Figure” and others use “Image,” they won’t group together
- To fix:
- Édition each caption: right-click > Édition Caption
- Change label to consistent choice (e.g., all “Figure”)
- Cliquez OK
Step 4: Vérifiez Tableau of Figures Settings
The table might be filtering out items.
- Cliquez avec le bouton droit the Tableau of Figures
- Sélectionnez Édition Field or Field Code
- You see code like:
{TOF ...} - Recherchez parameters:
\c "Figure"means it shows only “Figure” captions\l "Figure"means it shows specified label only
- Verify the label matches your captions
- If you need to change, edit the field code (advanced)
- Or delete and recreate with correct label (easier)
Step 5: Supprimez and Recreate Tableau of Figures
Most reliable fix.
- Cliquez avec le bouton droit the Tableau of Figures
- Sélectionnez Supprimez Tableau or press Supprimez
- The entire table is removed
- Positionnez le curseur where table should be
- Allez à Références > Tableau of Figures
- A dialog opens:
- Label: Choose label type (usually “Figure”)
- Format: Choose appearance
- Include label and number: Vérifiez or uncheck as desired
- Cliquez OK
- New table generates with current captions
- All captioned items now appear
Step 6: Mettez à jour All Fields After Adding Figures
New figures won’t appear until refresh.
- Add a new figure with caption
- Sélectionnez all text: Ctrl+A
- Press Ctrl+Shift+F9 (update ALL fields)
- Wait a few seconds
- Tableau of Figures now includes new figure
- Cliquez in document to deselect
Or selectively:
- Cliquez avec le bouton droit Tableau of Figures
- Sélectionnez Mettez à jour Field
- Choose “Mettez à jour entire table”
- Cliquez OK
Step 7: Fix Caption Numbering
If captions are numbered wrong (Figure 1, Figure 3, Figure 2):
- Cliquez avec le bouton droit the Tableau of Figures
- Sélectionnez Mettez à jour Field > Mettez à jour entire table
- This renumbers captions to sequential order
- Or manually renumber:
- Cliquez avec le bouton droit each caption > Édition Caption
- Manually change number
- Do this only if auto-numbering doesn’t work
Step 8: Vérifiez Bookmark Références
Some TOF uses bookmarks.
- Allez à Insérer > Bookmark
- Révision existing bookmarks
- Some bookmarks might be referenced in table of figures
- If bookmark not found, caption won’t appear
- Assurez-vous bookmarks are created for all captions
Step 9: Separate Tableaus for Different Label Types
If you have figures, photos, and illustrations all needing their own tables:
- Create separate Tableau of Figures for each:
- Allez à Références > Tableau of Figures
- Set Label to “Figure” for table 1
- Cliquez OK
- Create another table:
- Allez à Références > Tableau of Figures
- Set Label to “Photo” for table 2
- Cliquez OK
- Each table shows only items with matching label
Step 10: Rebuild Document if Severely Corrupted
Last resort:
- Copiez all document content (Ctrl+A, Ctrl+C)
- Create new document
- Collez as unformatted: Collez Special > Unformatted Text
- Re-add all captions fresh:
- Cliquez avec le bouton droit each figure > Insérer Caption
- Create new Tableau of Figures
- This ensures clean table with correct items
Pourquoi cela se produit
- Figures not captioned — Uncaptioned images don’t appear
- Inconsistent label names — “Figure” vs. “Image” vs. “Illustration” don’t match
- Tableau not updated — After adding captions, table wasn’t refreshed
- Caption deleted — Caption text removed but not via caption dialog
- Field corrupted — TOF field code is invalid
- Different document sources — Captions from multiple opened documents
- Caption hidden — Caption text is white/hidden or in wrong location
- Wrong label selected — TOF set to show “Image” but captions labeled “Figure”
Comment l’éviter
- Add captions immediately — Insérer caption right after adding figure
- Use consistent labels — Decide on “Figure” or “Photo” and stick with it
- Mettez à jour table after edits — Always refresh (Ctrl+Shift+F9) before sharing
- Test early — Create first TOF after first figure to verify
- Don’t manually edit captions — Use Insérer > Caption dialog, not direct text edit
- Verify captions show in references — Allez à Références > Captions to see all
- Mettez à jour before sharing — Actualisez all fields before sending document
- Use templates — Create template with proper caption setup
Toujours pas de résultat ? Solutions alternatives
- Create table manually — Type table with figure names and page numbers
- Use Fields instead — Insérer Field > Index and Tableaus > Tableau of Figures manually
- Use Google Docs — Different referencing system might work better
- Create bookmark-based TOF — Use bookmarks with cross-references
- Export captions to Excel — Manual workaround for complex scenarios
- Use caption tool add-ins — Third-party tools for advanced caption management
- Contact Microsoft Support — For persistent field/caption issues
Points clés
- Tableau of Figures shows only items with captions (Insérer > Caption)
- All captions must use same label type (e.g., all “Figure”)
- Mettez à jour table with Ctrl+Shift+F9 or right-click > Mettez à jour Field
- Add caption immediately after inserting figure
- Supprimez and recreate Tableau of Figures if corrupted
- Different label types need separate tables
- Page numbers auto-update; caption numbers auto-update
- New figures won’t appear until field refresh
Questions Fréquemment Posées
Why is my table of figures empty or showing wrong items?
Figures must have captions inserted via Insert > Caption. Table of Figures pulls from captions only. Add captions first, then recreate TOF.
How do I update the table of figures after adding new figures?
Right-click table > Update Field. Or select all (Ctrl+A) and press Ctrl+Shift+F9 to update all fields.
Can I include images without captions in table of figures?
No. Table of Figures works only with properly captioned items. Every item must have Insert > Caption applied.
