Fix: Table of Figures Wrong or Not Updating in Word

Your Tableau of Figures is empty or includes wrong figures. New figures you added don’t appear in the table. The table shows items from other documents or deleted figures. Page numbers in the table are wrong. Tableau of Figures was working but stopped after editing.

Step 1: Understand What Tableau of Figures Includes

Tableau of Figures only shows captioned items.

1. In your document, look at every figure/image
2. Cliquez avec le bouton droit each figure
3. If you see “Insérer Caption,” the figure isn’t captioned
4. If you see “Édition Caption,” the figure IS captioned
5. The Tableau of Figures shows ONLY figures with captions
6. All other images/figures are excluded

Step 2: Add Missing Captions

Figures without captions won’t appear in table.

3. A Caption dialog opens
4. It should show:

   • Number: Auto-numbered

The table might be filtering out items.

3. You see code like: {TOF ...}

   • \c "Figure" means it shows only “Figure” captions
   • \l "Figure" means it shows specified label only

6. If you need to change, edit the field code (advanced)
7. Or delete and recreate with correct label (easier)

Step 5: Supprimez and Recreate Tableau of Figures

Most reliable fix.

1. Cliquez avec le bouton droit the Tableau of Figures
2. Sélectionnez Supprimez Tableau or press Supprimez
3. The entire table is removed
4. Positionnez le curseur where table should be
5. Allez à Références > Tableau of Figures
6. A dialog opens:
   • Label: Choose label type (usually “Figure”)
   • Format: Choose appearance
   • Include label and number: Vérifiez or uncheck as desired
7. Cliquez OK
8. New table generates with current captions
9. All captioned items now appear

Step 6: Mettez à jour All Fields After Adding Figures

New figures won’t appear until refresh.

1. Add a new figure with caption
2. Sélectionnez all text: Ctrl+A
3. Press Ctrl+Shift+F9 (update ALL fields)
4. Wait a few seconds
5. Tableau of Figures now includes new figure
6. Cliquez in document to deselect

Step 7: Fix Caption Numbering

If captions are numbered wrong (Figure 1, Figure 3, Figure 2):

1. Cliquez avec le bouton droit the Tableau of Figures
2. Sélectionnez Mettez à jour Field > Mettez à jour entire table
3. This renumbers captions to sequential order
4. Or manually renumber:
   • Cliquez avec le bouton droit each caption > Édition Caption
   • Manually change number
   • Do this only if auto-numbering doesn’t work

Step 8: Vérifiez Bookmark Références

Some TOF uses bookmarks.

1. Allez à Insérer > Bookmark
2. Révision existing bookmarks
3. Some bookmarks might be referenced in table of figures
4. If bookmark not found, caption won’t appear
5. Assurez-vous bookmarks are created for all captions

Step 9: Separate Tableaus for Different Label Types

If you have figures, photos, and illustrations all needing their own tables:

1. Create separate Tableau of Figures for each:
   • Allez à Références > Tableau of Figures
   • Set Label to “Figure” for table 1
   • Cliquez OK
2. Create another table:
   • Allez à Références > Tableau of Figures
   • Set Label to “Photo” for table 2
   • Cliquez OK
3. Each table shows only items with matching label

Step 10: Rebuild Document if Severely Corrupted

Last resort:

1. Copiez all document content (Ctrl+A, Ctrl+C)
2. Create new document
3. Collez as unformatted: Collez Special > Unformatted Text
4. Re-add all captions fresh:
   • Cliquez avec le bouton droit each figure > Insérer Caption
5. Create new Tableau of Figures
6. This ensures clean table with correct items
