Fix: Equation Editor Not Working in Word
Resposta Rápida
Look for Insert > Equation or press Alt+=. If missing, update Office or reinstall. Check AutoCorrect settings if equations converting incorrectly.
O problema
The Equation Editaror button is missing from the Word ribbon. When you try to insert an equation, nothing happens. Equations you create show as plain text instead of formatted math. The equation editor dialog won’t open. Keyboard shortcut Alt+= doesn’t work. You can’t access math symbols or equation formatting.
Correção rápida
Use Alt+= keyboard shortcut:
- Posicione o cursor where you want the equation
- Press Alt + = (Alt key and equals sign)
- An equation placeholder aparece
- Type your equation using standard notation:
x^2for x squaredx/2for x divided by 2sqrt(x)for square root(x+1)/(x-1)for fractions
- When done, press Ctrl+S to save or click outside the equation
If this doesn’t work, proceed to Solução passo a passo.
Solução passo a passo
Step 1: Find Equation Editaror in the Ribbon
The Equation Editaror location varies by Word version.
Newer Word versions (2019+):
- Vá para Inserir tab
- Procure Equation button (may say “Equation” or show √x symbol)
- If not visible, click Symbols dropdown
- Procure Equation option
- Clique to insert
Older Word versions:
- Vá para Inserir tab
- Procure Equation Editaror or Math Equation button
- Clique to open
If you can’t find it anywhere, the add-in is disabled or Office isn’t installed correctly.
Step 2: Ative Equation Editaror via Options
Equation tools might be hidden or disabled.
- Vá para Arquivo > Opções
- Clique Advanced in left sidebar
- Scroll to Editaring Options or Display section
- Procure any setting related to equations or math
- If you find a checkbox about equations, ensure it’s checked
- Clique OK
This usually isn’t the issue, but worth checking.
Step 3: Atualize Office to Latest Version
Equation Editaror bugs are fixed in updates.
- Open any Office app (Word, Excel, etc.)
- Vá para Arquivo > Account
- Clique Atualize Options
- Clique Atualize Agora
- Wait for updates to complete
- Reinicie your computer
- Tente Equation Editaror again
Step 4: Reinstale Office Math Equation Component
The Equation Editaror is part of Office; reinstalling focuses on that component.
Windows:
- Vá para Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features
- Find Microsoft Office in the list
- Clique Change
- Selecione Quick Repair
- Wait for completion (usually 2-5 minutes)
- If Equation Editaror still missing, repeat and select Online Repair instead
- Online Repair rebuilds core Office components
- Tente Equation Editaror again
Mac:
- Open Finder > Applications > Microsoft Office
- Find and launch Microsoft Office Setup Assistant or Office Installer
- Follow prompts to repair or reinstall Office
- Tente Equation Editaror again
Step 5: Verifique AutoCorrect Settings
Math AutoCorrect might be converting equations to text.
- Vá para Arquivo > Opções
- Clique Proofing in left sidebar
- Clique AutoCorrect Options
- Vá para Math AutoCorrect tab
- Revisar the list of automatic replacements
- If conversions you don’t want are listed, uncheck the boxes
- Or uncheck “Use Math AutoCorrect outside of math regions” entirely
- Clique OK twice
Step 6: Test with Alt+= Shortcut
If ribbon button won’t work, try keyboard shortcut.
- Clique in your document where equation should go
- Press and hold Alt
- While holding Alt, press = (equals key)
- Release both
- An equation field should appear
- Type your equation
If this works, Equation Editaror is installed but ribbon button is hidden.
Step 7: Customize Ribbon to Show Equation Button
If Alt+= works but ribbon button is hidden:
- Clique com o botão direito anywhere in the ribbon
- Selecione Customize the Ribbon
- On the right side, find Inserir tab
- Look in the list for Equation or Math Equation
- If you see it but it’s not in the active list, select it and click Add >>
- Clique OK
- Equation button should now appear in the Inserir ribbon
Step 8: Uninstall and Reinstale Office Completely
If equation editor is severely broken:
- Vá para Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features
- Find Microsoft Office
- Clique Uninstall (complete uninstall)
- Wait for removal (takes 5-10 minutes)
- Download Office from office.com (or use installation media)
- Run installer and follow prompts
- During install, ensure all components are selected (don’t do custom/minimal install)
- Reinicie computer
- Tente Equation Editaror
Step 9: Use Alternative Equation Ferramentas
If Equation Editaror remains broken:
- MathType add-in — Third-party professional equation editor (download from Design Science)
- LaTeX in Word plugin — Some users install LaTeX plugins for more advanced equations
- Word’s built-in Simple Equations — Basic math can be done with the Symbol/Character feature
- Inserir equations as images — Type in external equation editor (like Wolfram Alpha), take screenshot, insert as image
Por que isso acontece
- Office not fully installed — Equation component not included in minimal install
- Atualize removed component — Office update disabled or removed equation tools
- Corrupted Office installation — Core files damaged or incomplete
- Add-in disabled — Equation Editaror exists but is disabled in Trust Center
- AutoCorrect converting to text — Math AutoCorrect settings replacing equations
- Incompatible Office version — Some older versions have equation compatibility issues
- Third-party software conflicting — Other math tools disabling Office equation editor
- Missing dependencies — Equation Editaror depends on other Office components
Como evitar
- Do full Office install — Don’t choose “minimal” or “custom”; do full install
- Keep Office updated — Atualizes fix equation bugs
- Don’t disable Trust Center items — Let Office manage what’s trusted
- Regular backups — Before major updates, backup Office directory
- Test equation editor early — After installing Office, test Alt+= works
- Desative unnecessary add-ins — Only install equation-related add-ins if needed
- Avoid third-party equation tools conflicting — If using external tools, ensure compatibility
- Keep system updated — Windows/Mac updates fix compatibility issues
Ainda não funciona? Soluções alternativas
- Use Inserir > Special Character — Inserir Greek letters and symbols manually
- Use Inserir > Symbol — Browse symbol fonts for mathematical operators
- Type subscripts/superscripts manually — Use Ctrl+Shift+P for superscript, Ctrl+= for subscript
- Use online equation editors — Create equation on website, export as image, insert into Word
- Switch to Google Docs — Google Docs equation editor works differently but is reliable
- Use OneNote math feature — OneNote has its own math equation tool; copy to Word if possible
- Contact Microsoft Support — Provide Office version, system info, and error messages
- Use Microsoft 365 Word Online — Web version may have working equation editor

Perguntas Frequentes
Why isn't the Equation Editor icon visible in the Word ribbon?
Equation Editor might be hidden under Insert > Symbols > Equation. Or it's called 'Math Equation' in newer Word. If missing entirely, reinstall Office.
Can I insert equations using keyboard shortcuts instead of ribbon?
Yes. Press Alt+= (Alt key and equals) to insert equation. Then type your equation using Office math syntax (e.g., x^2 for x squared).
Why do my equations keep reverting to plain text?
Math AutoCorrect might be converting them. Go to File > Options > Proofing > AutoCorrect Options > Math AutoCorrect tab > uncheck conversions you don't want.
