The 问题
The 参考文献 button in Word is grayed out or inactive. You try to insert a 参考文献, but nothing appears. The 参考文献 exists but shows as empty (no sources listed). You’ve created citations but the 参考文献 won’t generate. The 参考文献 field shows an 错误 or just a placeholder.

Add citations first, then insert 参考文献:
- Position cursor in your 文档 where you want a 引用
- Go to References tab in ribbon
- Click Insert 引用 (or Insert 尾注/脚注 depending on method)
- Create or select a source:
- Click Insert 引用 > Add New Source
- Enter source details (Author, Title, publication info)
- Click OK
- The 引用 出现在 your 文档
- Repeat for each source you want to cite (add at least 1)
- Once you have citations, go to References > 参考文献
- Select a 样式 (e.g., APA, Chicago, MLA)
- A 参考文献 appears listing all your sources

步骤 1: 验证 参考文献 Button is Active
检查 if 参考文献 功能 is enabled.
- Go to References tab in ribbon
- Look for 参考文献 button (usually shows list/books icon)
- If grayed out, the button is inactive (means no citations exist)
- To activate, you must add at least one 引用 first (步骤 2)
- If button is active (not grayed), proceed to 步骤 3
步骤 2: Add Citations if You Haven’t Already
参考文献 requires sources.
- Position cursor where you want first 引用
- Go to References > Insert 引用
- A dropdown appears
- Click Add New Source
- The Create Source dialog opens
- Fill in fields:
- Type of Source: Choose (Book, Journal Article, Website, etc.)
- Author: Enter author name(s)
- Title: Enter work title
- Year: Enter publication year
- Publisher: Enter publisher
- URL: For web sources, enter URL
- Click OK
- The 引用 is inserted and source is saved
- Repeat for each source
- Now 参考文献 button should be active

Generate 参考文献 from citations.
- Position cursor where 参考文献 should go (usually end of 文档)
- Go to References > 参考文献
- Click the dropdown arrow
- A list of 参考文献 styles appears:
- APA
- Chicago Manual of 样式
- IEEE
- MLA
- Custom styles
- Click your desired 样式
- 参考文献 is inserted showing all cited sources
- All sources you cited appear in the 参考文献 automatically

参考文献 only includes saved sources.
- Go to References > Manage Sources (or Manage Database)
- A Source Manager dialog opens
- On left side, you see “Master List” (all available sources)
- On right side, you see “Current List” (sources used in this 文档)
- Look in Current List—this is what shows in 参考文献
- If Current List is empty:
- In Master List, find your source
- Click it to select
- Click Copy button (middle area)
- Source moves to Current List
- Click OK
- Now insert 参考文献 again
- Your source should appear
步骤 5: Ensure 参考文献 样式 is Correct
Wrong 样式 might make 参考文献 appear empty or incorrect.
- Locate your existing 参考文献 in the 文档
- Right-click the 参考文献
- Select 参考文献 Properties or Edit 参考文献

- To change 样式:
- Delete existing 参考文献 (right-click > Delete)
- Go to References > 参考文献
- Select different 样式
- Reinsert
- Now 参考文献 uses correct 样式

参考文献 is actually a field; field code might be corrupted.
- Right-click the 参考文献
- Select Edit Field or Field Code

- Reinsert via References > 参考文献 > choose 样式

- Click anywhere in the 参考文献
- Right-click it
- Select 更新 Field or press Ctrl+Shift+F9
- 参考文献 refreshes with latest sources
- Do this whenever you add new citations
步骤 8: 检查 引用 Placeholders
Citations entered as placeholders might not generate 参考文献 entries.
- Go to References > Manage Sources
- Look for any sources marked as “[Placeholder]” or incomplete
- Select placeholder source
- Click Edit button
- Complete all required fields (Author, Title, etc.)
- Click OK to 保存
- Delete and reinsert 参考文献
- Placeholder source should now appear

If all else fails:
- Locate your 参考文献 in 文档
- Right-click it
- Select Delete
- 参考文献 field is removed
- Manually 验证 you have citations (References > Manage Sources should show current sources)
- Position cursor where 参考文献 should be
- Go to References > 参考文献
- Select 样式
- 参考文献 recreates
- All cited sources should now appear

Sometimes 参考文献 displays as code instead of formatted list.
- Right-click the 参考文献
- If you see field code like
{BIBLIOGRAPHY ...}instead of formatted list - Hold Alt and press F9 to toggle field code view
- Or right-click > Toggle Field Codes
- 参考文献 now displays as formatted list
Why This Happens
- No citations added — 参考文献 requires at least one 引用
- Sources not in Current List — Sources exist in Master List but not added to current 文档
- 参考文献 placeholder — 参考文献 inserted as placeholder without 样式 selected
- Field code corrupted — 参考文献 field syntax broken
- 样式 not selected — 参考文献 exists but has no formatting 样式
- Refresh needed — 参考文献 not updated after adding new citations
- Custom sources not saved — Sources created but not properly saved to database
