Go to References > Manage Sources, add missing sources, 验证 citations 参考 correct source, 更新 参考文献.

The 问题

Your Word citations display as blanks, question marks, or partial information. 引用 placeholders show ”[?]” or “[source not found].” When you hover over citations, source details don’t appear. 参考文献 shows sources as incomplete or missing. Moving 文档 to new computer breaks citations. Citations 参考 sources that no longer exist in the 文档.

Quick 修复

Restore missing sources immediately:

  1. Go to References > Manage Sources (or Insert > 引用 > Manage Sources)
  2. The Source Manager dialog opens
  3. Left side shows “Master List” (all available sources)
  4. Right side shows “Current List” (sources in this 文档)
  5. Look in Current List for citations with missing sources
  6. If Current List is empty, no sources exist
  7. To restore:
    • In Master List, find the source
    • Click it to select
    • Click Copy button
    • Source moves to Current List
  8. If source not in Master List, create new:
    • Click New
    • Enter source information
    • Click OK
  9. Repeat for all missing sources
  10. 关闭 dialog
  11. Citations now display correctly

步骤 1: 打开 Source Manager

Access all sources and citations.

  1. Go to References tab in ribbon
  2. Click Manage Sources or 引用 Sources button (may be labeled differently)
  3. Or go to Insert > 引用 > Manage Sources
  4. The Source Manager dialog opens
  5. Two lists appear:
    • Master List (left): All sources ever created on this computer
    • Current List (right): Sources used in current 文档

Find sources that citations 参考.

  1. In Current List (right side), look for sources with missing info
  2. Click each source listed
  3. Details appear below:
    • Author
    • Title
    • Year
    • Other fields
  4. If details are blank or incomplete, source information is missing
  5. These missing sources cause citations to display as ”?” or blank

Fill in details for incomplete sources.

  1. In Current List, select a source with missing info
  2. Click Edit button (middle area between lists)
  3. The Create Source dialog opens
  4. Fill in missing fields:
    • Author: Enter author name

    • Year: Enter publication year
    • Publisher: Enter publisher
    • URL: Enter web address if applicable

  1. In Master List (left side), look for sources you need
  2. To search, use the search box above Master List

  7. Now citations can 参考 these sources
  8. 关闭 Source Manager
  9. Citations should display correctly

Source doesn’t exist; create it.

  1. In Source Manager, ensure Current List is displayed
  2. Click New button
  3. The Create Source dialog opens
  4. In Type of Source, choose the correct type:
    • Book
    • Journal Article
    • Website
    • Etc.
  5. Fill in all relevant fields:
    • Author/Editor: Enter name(s)
    • Title: Enter title
    • Year: Enter publication year
    • Publication Information: Publisher, URL, etc.
  6. Click OK
  7. New source is created and added to Current List
  8. Repeat for each missing source

引用 might be set to 参考 source that was deleted.

  1. Right-click the 问题 引用 in 文档
  2. Select Edit 引用
  3. An Edit 引用 dialog opens
  4. It shows which source the 引用 uses
  5. If that source is missing, select correct source from dropdown
  6. If correct source not in list, create it first (步骤 5)
  7. Once correct source selected, click OK
  8. 引用 now displays with correct source info

步骤 7: 检查 引用 Placeholder Settings

Some citations show as [placeholder] if source incomplete.

  1. In Source Manager, look for sources marked as “[Placeholder]”
  2. These are temporary citations with missing info
  3. Select each placeholder
  4. Click Edit
  5. Complete ALL required fields
  6. Click OK
  7. Placeholder status removed
  8. Placeholder citations now display correctly

步骤 8: Export and Import Source List

If moving 文档 to new computer, sources don’t transfer.

To export sources (before moving):

  1. On original computer, 打开 Source Manager
  2. In Master List, select all sources (Ctrl+A)
  3. Look for “Copy All” or “Export” option (varies by Word 版本)
  4. Copy sources
  5. 保存 a copy of the master source list (if export available)

To import sources (on new computer):

  1. On new computer, 打开 Source Manager
  2. Look for “Import” option
  3. Select source list 文件 from original computer
  4. Import loads all sources
  5. Citations now display correctly

If you have earlier 版本 of 文档:

  1. 打开 the earlier 版本 on original computer
  2. 打开 Source Manager
  3. All sources should appear in Master List
  4. Export or note the sources
  5. In your current 文档, create these sources (Steps 5)
  6. Citations now have source information

After restoring sources:

  1. Go to References > 参考文献
  2. Click existing 参考文献 (if present) or insert new
  3. 参考文献 updates to show all sources

    • Press Ctrl+Shift+F9 (更新 all fields)
  5. All citations and 参考文献 now current

  1. Source information not saved — Created 引用 but didn’t 保存 full source details

  3. 文档 moved to new computer — Master List sources don’t transfer between computers
  4. Placeholder citations — Incomplete citations create placeholder without full source
  5. Backup/sync 问题 — OneDrive or cloud backup didn’t sync source data
  6. Multiple Office installations — Different installations have different Master Lists
  7. Source 文件 corrupted — Source data 文件 damaged, info unrecoverable
  8. 引用 points to deleted source — Source was present but was deleted

如何 Prevent It

  1. Complete source info immediately — Don’t use placeholder citations; fill in all fields
  2. 保存 文档 after adding sources — 保存 immediately after 引用 creation
  3. Export sources regularly — Export Master List to backup 文件 periodically
  4. Use consistent source 格式 — Same spelling/authors across all citations
  5. Test citations before sharing — 验证 sources display correctly
  6. Keep Master List current — Regularly maintain source database
  7. Back up source 文件 — Source database stored in Office folder; back up regularly
  8. Create source on all computers — If using multiple devices, sync sources somehow

Still Not Working? Alternative Solutions

  1. Create manual 参考文献 — Type sources manually at end of 文档
  2. Copy from online generator — Use web-based 引用 formatter (EasyBib, CitationMachine)
  3. Use Zotero or Mendeley — Dedicated 引用 management software
  4. Recreate all citations — Delete all broken citations, recreate from scratch
  5. Restore from cloud backup — If 文档 in OneDrive/SharePoint, restore older 版本
  6. Recover 文件 版本 — 文件 > Info > 版本 History or Recover Unsaved Documents
  7. Contact Microsoft 支持 — For persistent source corruption
  8. Use Google Docs — Different 引用 system might work better
