Fix: Indentation Not Working Properly in Word
Resposta Rápida
Use Home > Paragraph dialog to set indentation, not Tab key. Or click Increase/Decrease Indent buttons in ribbon.
O problema
Pressing Tab to indent doesn’t create a full paragraph indent—it just moves to the next tab stop. Indentation buttons in the ribbon don’t seem to do anything. The ruler’s indent markers don’t work when dragged. Hanging indents don’t apply correctly. Indent settings from the Paragraph dialog don’t stick. Your document has random indentation that won’t change.
Correção rápida
Use Paragraph dialog instead of Tab key:
- Selecione the paragraph(s) you want to indent
- Vá para Página inicial tab
- Clique the small arrow at bottom-right of Paragraph group
- The Paragraph dialog opens
- In Indentation section:
- Before text: Enter
0.5"to indent from left margin - First line: Leave at 0 (or enter negative value for hanging indent)
- After text: Leave at 0 unless you want right-side indent
- Before text: Enter
- Clique OK
- Paragraph(s) now properly indented
If indentation still doesn’t work, proceed to Solução passo a passo.
Solução passo a passo
Step 1: Limpe Tab Stops and Direct Formatoting
Tab stops interfere with indentation.
- Show formatting marks: **Ctrl + ***
- Procure tab symbols (→) in your text
- If you see tabs before text, they’re blocking indentation
- Selecione paragraphs with indentation problems
- Vá para Página inicial > Paragraph dialog
- Clique Tabs at bottom-left
- In the Tab stop position field, select all listed positions and click Limpe All
- Clique OK twice
- Agora try indenting again
Step 2: Desative Tab-Based Indentation Setting
Word can be configured to use Tab for indentation; disable this if causing problems.
- Vá para Arquivo > Opções
- Clique Advanced in left sidebar
- Scroll to Editaring Options section
- Uncheck: “Set left and first indent with tabs and backspaces”
- This prevents Tab from acting as indent
- Clique OK
- Agora Tab behaves normally, and indentation uses Paragraph settings
Step 3: Use Ribbon Indent Buttons
Quick indentation without dialog.
- Selecione paragraph(s) to indent
- Vá para Página inicial tab
- Procure Increase Indent button (right arrow or arrow pointing right)
- Clique Increase Indent to add indent (usually 0.5” per click)
- Clique Decrease Indent (left arrow) to remove indent
- Each click indents/un-indents by standard increment
This is quickest for simple indentation without dialog.
Step 4: Adjust Ruler Markers for Precise Indentation
The ruler provides visual control.
- If ruler not visible, go to Exibir > Ruler and check it
- On the ruler at top, you see three markers:
- Top triangle (First Line Indent): Indents only first line
- Bottom triangle (Left Indent): Indents entire paragraph
- Rectangle below (Left Indent marker): Might be combined with bottom triangle
- Selecione a paragraph
- Drag the bottom triangle to the right to indent all lines
- Drag the top triangle separately if you want first line different from rest
- Dragging visually shows the indent in real-time
If ruler markers are locked or won’t drag:
- Verifique that no text boxes or other objects are selected instead
- Certifique-se you’re clicking directly on the marker, not near it
Step 5: Set Hanging Indent (indent all but first line)
Hanging indent is common for lists and citations.
- Selecione the paragraph
- Vá para Página inicial > Paragraph dialog
- In Indentation section:
- Before text: Set to
0.5"(distance from left margin) - First line: Set to
-0.5"(negative value; this creates the hanging effect)
- Before text: Set to
- Clique OK
- All lines except the first are indented 0.5”
Alternatively, using ruler:
- Drag top triangle to the right
- Drag bottom triangle to the left
- This visually creates hanging indent
Step 6: Set First Line Indent Only
Indent only the first line (common for essays).
- Selecione paragraph
- Vá para Página inicial > Paragraph dialog
- In Indentation section:
- Before text: Set to
0"(no left indent) - First line: Set to
0.5"(only first line indents)
- Before text: Set to
- Clique OK
- Only the first line is indented
Step 7: Apply Right-Side Indentation
Control indent from right margin too.
- Selecione paragraph(s)
- Vá para Página inicial > Paragraph dialog
- In Indentation section:
- Before text: Control left indent as usual
- After text: Set to
0.5"or desired right indent
- Clique OK
- Text now indents from both left and right margins
Step 8: Fix Indentation That Won’t Stay
If indentation keeps reverting:
- The paragraph might be using a style with fixed indentation
- Clique com o botão direito on the paragraph
- Look at bottom of context menu: it shows which style is applied (e.g., “Normal”, “Heading 1”)
- Verifique if that style has indentation set
- To override, select the paragraph and apply Paragraph dialog indentation with “At least” line spacing (maintains indent)
- Or modify the style: Clique com o botão direito style name > Modify > set indentation in the Paragraph section
Step 9: Reset All Indentation to Defaults
If document has mixed, conflicting indentation:
- Selecione all (Ctrl+A)
- Vá para Página inicial > Limpe All Formatoting (or Ctrl+M)
- Agora select text again
- Apply indentation fresh via Paragraph dialog or Indent buttons
- This clears all direct formatting including conflicting indents
Por que isso acontece
- Tab key used for indent — Tab is for tab stops, not indents; causes confusion
- Tab stops set in document — Preset tab stops limit where Tab moves cursor
- Indentation in style — Paragraph style has indentation that direct formatting doesn’t override
- Direct formatting conflicts — Multiple formatting sources (style + direct) create unexpected behavior
- Ruler markers misunderstood — Users drag wrong marker or click instead of drag
- Negative indentation — Negative indent values hidden or not intentional
- Right-margin indentation preventing full indent — “After text” indent reduces available width
- Copie/paste from external source — Coled text brings incompatible indentation
Como evitar
- Never use Tab for indentation — Use Paragraph dialog or Indent buttons only
- Limpe tabs before setting indentation — Remova all tab stops via Paragraph dialog > Tabs
- Understand first-line vs. hanging vs. full indent — Know which you need before applying
- Apply indentation via styles — For entire document consistency, modify style not individual paragraphs
- Show ruler and formatting marks — Visual indicators help understand indentation
- Test indentation immediately — After setting, verify it aparece as intended
- Use Indent buttons for quick changes — Página inicial > Increase/Decrease Indent is intuitive
- Create template with correct indentation — Save properly-indented document as template
Ainda não funciona? Soluções alternativas
- Recreate paragraph in new document — Copie problematic paragraph to new doc, set indentation fresh
- Limpe direct formatting > reapply style — Ctrl+M removes all direct formatting, style applies fresh
- Modify Normal style — Clique com o botão direito Normal > Modify > set indentation to 0, apply to all (resets defaults)
- Use Find & Replace — Página inicial > Replace > (advanced) to find paragraphs with specific indents, replace systematically
- Verifique for hidden formatting codes — Ctrl+H (Find & Replace) > More Options > Search > Formato to search for specific indentation values
- Convert document to new format — Arquivo > Save As > Word Document (.docx) to rebuild structure
- Desative Track Changes — Revisar > Controlar alterações to ensure none are affecting formatting
- Contact Microsoft Support — For persistent indentation issues, provide document and detailed description

Perguntas Frequentes
Why doesn't pressing Tab create an indent in Word?
Tab is set to move to next tab stop (preset position), not create a full indent. Use Home > Paragraph dialog instead. Or go to File > Options > Proofing > AutoCorrect Options > AutoFormat As You Type > uncheck 'Set left and first indent with tabs and backspaces'.
How do I indent the first line of a paragraph only?
Use 'First line' indent in Paragraph dialog. Select the paragraph, open Paragraph dialog (Home > arrow), set 'First line' to 0.5 inches, click OK.
Can I use the Tab key for indentation?
Not recommended. Tab is meant for moving to preset positions. Use Home > Increase Indent button or Paragraph dialog instead. If Tab must work, adjust AutoCorrect settings.
