Why .docx Files Won’t Open

There are several reasons a .docx file might not open, from security blocks to file associations.

Step-by-Step Fix

Problem: “File blocked” or Security Warning

1. Right-click the file in File Explorer
2. Select Properties
3. At the bottom of the General tab, check Unblock
4. Click OK and try opening again

Problem: Opens in Wrong Program

1. Right-click the .docx file
2. Select Open with > Choose another app
3. Select Microsoft Word
4. Check Always use this app to open .docx files
5. Click OK
