Fixing Office Activation Problems

Activation errors can appear even with a valid subscription due to account issues, licensing cache problems, or connectivity issues.

Step-by-Step Fix

Step 1: Check Subscription Status

1. Go to account.microsoft.com/services
2. Verify your Microsoft 365 subscription is active
3. If expired, renew your subscription
4. If active, proceed to Step 2

Step 2: Sign Out and Back In

1. Open Word
2. Go to File > Account
3. Click Sign Out
4. Close Word completely
5. Reopen Word and sign in with the correct Microsoft account

Step 3: Run the Activation Troubleshooter

1. Go to File > Account
2. Under Product Information, click Troubleshoot
3. If no troubleshoot option, download the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant
4. Run the tool and follow its instructions

Step 4: Reset Office Licensing

1. Close all Office apps
2. Open Command Prompt as Administrator
3. Navigate to the Office folder:
   • cd "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16" or
   • cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office16"
4. Run: cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus to check current license status
5. Run: cscript ospp.vbs /act to attempt reactivation

Step 5: Repair Office Installation

1. Go to Settings > Apps > Apps & Features
2. Find Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365
3. Click Modify > Online Repair
4. This reinstalls licensing components
