Overview

GenText and Scribbr help at different stages of academic writing. GenText helps you write: it drafts sections from your outline, summarizes and rephrases text, and finds academic papers that support a claim, with a formatted citation. It runs in the browser at app.gentext.ai and as a Microsoft Word add-in, on one account.

Scribbr checks finished work. It offers proofreading and editing by human editors, an AI proofreader, and plagiarism reports you pay for per check.

What GenText does

• Draft from an outline. Generate Draft turns your outline into sections you can edit.
• Summarize and rephrase. Generate Summary and Rephrase Text work on your own text.
• Cite research. GenText suggests academic papers that support a claim and inserts a formatted citation. In the Word add-in: APA 7th, MLA 9th, Chicago (author-date), Harvard and IEEE.
• Check references. “Check references” in the Word add-in checks each reference against published records and flags retracted papers. A reference that is not found may still be real, so check it yourself.

GenText is not a grammar checker and has no plagiarism checker.

What Scribbr does

• Human proofreading and editing. Scribbr says its editors work on theses, dissertations and other academic documents.
• AI proofreader. Scribbr says it checks grammar, unclear sentences, citation errors, style inconsistencies and AI-generated text, with a free scan.
• Plagiarism checker. A free report tells you if your text may contain plagiarism. The Premium report, priced per check, gives the detail to review and resolve matches. Scribbr says submissions are never added to its content database.

When to choose GenText

• You are still writing and want help drafting sections from an outline.
• You need academic papers and formatted citations for your claims, in Word.
• You want a reference check on the document you are writing.

When to choose Scribbr

• Your paper is finished and you want a human editor or an AI proofread.
• You need a plagiarism report before you submit.
