If you write your thesis in Microsoft Word, the most useful tools work inside that file: finding sources, citing them in your style, polishing the English, and checking the reference list before you submit. Different tools are strongest at different jobs, so this guide says which tool fits which job.
The short answer
- Drafting with real sources and checking your references: GenText. It finds papers from Semantic Scholar, inserts citations in your style, and its Word add-in checks every reference against published records and flags retracted papers.
- Grammar and proofreading: Grammarly, Trinka or Writefull.
- Paraphrasing: QuillBot.
- A plagiarism or AI-detection check: Grammarly Pro, QuillBot Premium, Paperpal Prime or Trinka Premium Plus. GenText does not check plagiarism. Follow your university’s requirements for which checker to use.
- General ideas and restructuring: ChatGPT for Word, free on every ChatGPT plan.

Why GenText for a thesis
- Sources first. Ask for papers that support a claim and insert the citation, without leaving Word.
- Five citation styles. APA 7th, MLA 9th, Chicago (author-date), Harvard and IEEE, in-text with a bibliography or as footnotes.
- A reference check before you submit. Run “Check references” on a list you, a co-author or an AI wrote. It flags entries with no matching published record and retracted papers. A reference that is not found may still be real, such as a book chapter, so check it yourself.
- A student price. Premium is $99 a year with an academic email.
Where others are stronger
- Grammar and academic English. Grammarly, Trinka and Writefull are editing tools first. Writefull’s models are trained on journal articles.
- Plagiarism and AI-content checks. GenText does not check plagiarism. Grammarly Pro, QuillBot Premium, Paperpal Prime and Trinka Premium Plus include plagiarism or AI-content checks.
- Price. Trinka Premium ($48 a year as shown), Paperpal Prime ($144 a year), Grammarly Pro ($144 a year) and Writefull (US$150 a year) all cost less per year than GenText Premium ($190). Trinka is also below the GenText student price of $99 a year.
- LaTeX. If you write in Overleaf, Writefull and Paperpal work there. GenText works in the browser and in Microsoft Word.
A suggested workflow
- Draft each chapter section from your outline in GenText, with citations as you go.
- Polish the English with an editing tool you like.
- Before submission, run GenText’s “Check references” on the full bibliography.
- Follow your university’s rules on plagiarism checks and AI use.
